DEAL-BREAKER
Everyone has a limit to their tolerance level. How much can one person take? or can you take any at all. What is a deal breaker for you.
In some marriages the deal breaker is infidelty for others it's physical abuse. For Sylvia in today's story she had little patience for violence.
Sylvia was a unique young woman. You meet her and just realize she was a rare type that don't come to earth often. As opposed to most women in her time that were timid, shy and dependant upon their men folk, Sylvia was independent. She was a charmer, undeniably. She had really long dark hair and her skin was light in complexion, something that was uncommon in her parts at that time, had intriguing eyes, mesmerizing smile but most importantly she was innately intelligent. Sylvia did so well in her academics that she had a scholarship.
Before high School, suitors started coming,it was a common thing then. Sylvia didn't care much, she left the responsibility of choosing to her parents. She was more concerned with her education and her mother's trade. She helped her mother greatly with her business so her mother practically let her run it. A husband was chosen for Sylvia,a high school teacher that completed his studies abroad. Big deal at that time,he knew how to converse with white men and dressed like them so he was revered.
Sylvia moved to her husband's house and continued schooling. Her husband, most women described him as an angel made sure she was as comfortable as possible. He provided fourteen maids for her. She did absolutely nothing in the house, her husband encouraged her to read even more than she did before she married him. She was a bright student and he swore she would not be relegated because she was a female and he would make sure she attained the highest level of education.
Life was good for this couple and although Sylvia didn't care for her husband much she respected him. A little disagreement though lead to a full quarrel and her husband slapped her. Sylvia was dazed and she looked at him steadily for some minutes, she could not focus on anything else save his face, this was a man she had always known to be good. He was already decending to his knees infact, pleading,"it was a mistake" he said,he was angry, carried away, the devil must have had a hand in it and other words that a repentant husband who hit his wife would say. He went on begging and Sylvia found it impossible to say anything, she didn't know what to say really, she didn't really understand the situation, she was dazed and unsure. Why would he ever think to slap her,was he that sort of a man? He was supposed to be a good man, everyone said that, she knew that.
They spent that day sitting at home, her husband begging profusely non-stop,she saying nothing. The next day he had to leave for work but Sylvia stayed home. Two hours before he was due to close from work she stood up from where she sat on her bed, decided. She left with only the things she purchased with her own money.
Her mother greeted her news at home with fury. How dare he? Who does he think he is, lay that old like tree-trunk hand on her beautiful daughter, ungrateful man,her daughter with her beauty and brains was made for kings. The marriage was indeed a mistake. Sylvia's father said little, like her husband he was a quiet man. Sylvia's husband came begging that night, her mother flew at him and slapped him double and ordered him out. He came the next day and the next,he begged Sylvia to slap him too if that would make her come back. He sent different people to help him beg and Sylvia threaded to kill herself if he came to her father's house again and her parents begged him never to come again as they were not ready to loose their child.
Sylvia was pregnant though with his child, eating so much hot peppers didn't abort the pregnancy, the pharmacist who was a good friend sold her folic acid instead of abortion pills, months later she died having her baby.
